Siendo perseguidos por los Mings de China, el joven Kotaro y su perro encuentran a un samurai anónimo ("Nanashi") quien constantemente está siendo atormentado por los sueños del pasado que lo conducen a sellar su espada. Entre los Mings se encuentra un luchador Occidental llamado Rarou, que tiene como principal preocupación sólo encontrar a un rival digno al que enfrentarse. Cuando tanto el choque de grupos con una Sengoku-era del señor feudal, un general orgulloso y monjes divididos entre la fe y la supervivencia, la razón detrás de la búsqueda de los Mings pone a prueba la amistad entre Kotaro y Nanashi.
